Acne and Your Teenager

Spots 150x150 Acne and Your TeenagerIt can be heartbreaking for a parent to look on as our teenager loses confidence in how they look, and how they appear to the rest of the world.  It’s important that as loving parents, we provide the correct information and direction about how to treat acne.  It’s important to realise that in most cases treatment can radically reduce the impact of acne.

Unfortunately, there isn’t just one cure for acne. There are many types of acne, and it’s vital to know which type your teenager is experiencing to help make the right choices regarding the method of treatment.  Thankfully there’s a whole lot more available to combat acne today than there was when we were teenagers. New treatment regimens and medications have been developed since we were teenagers.  As a matter of fact, most common acne conditions can be brought easily under control – the new buzzwords are ‘acne management’ rather than ‘acne cure’.

Your teenager is probably trying all sorts of remedies to control his/her acne. As supportive, loving parents, it is important to keep in mind that even though your teen may not be asking directly for your help, he/she still wants it.  Discussing your own personal experience with acne can help you to bond for your teen, and show them you’re on their side.

Let your teenager know that most teens suffer from acne at some stage.  The friend who has the clear enviable skin now may not be that way tomorrow.

If your teenager has tried a few over-the-counter medications with little to no success, consider taking your him/her to a dedicated acne clinic.  Just as you would take your teenager to a dentist, the professionals in an acne clinic can pinpoint the exact type of acne your teen has, and so advise on the correct treatment regimen.

Your teen may be recommended an alternate, prescription-only ointment, lotion, or even oral medication to help clear up the condition and offer relief from physical discomfort.  With this level of support, you’ll be their hero.
